Who is Maggie Smith – The face of AFWL 2015
With Africa Fashion Week London looming large, we turn our attention to the face of the show – Maggie Smith. Africa Fashion take a quick look at how she went from being a receptionist to being the stunning face of #AFWL2015 – in a matter of weeks.
Until recently, Maggie Smith was a receptionist in the chilly Scottish town of Airdrie. For those unfamiliar with the place, it’s a town in North Lanarkshire, Scotland, east of Glasgow city centre.
On 11th February, the newspapers announced that Ugandan-born Maggie was the new face of Africa Fashion Week London and her life hasn’t quite been the same since.
With thousands of votes cast by the public, 20-year old Maggie beat her nearest rivals by 10%.
“I am very excited about being the face of Africa Fashion Week London”, she told reporters. “I can’t thank those who voted for me enough”.
“While I know I have family across the globe, from Southampton, Airdrie and Uganda – right across to Australia – there were so many people who voted for me who have never met me. I will never forget the opportunity they have afforded me”.
“My face will feature on ticket passes, website promotion and on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram during the fashion week”, said Maggie. “There will also be a backdrop of an image of my face on the catwalk for the fashion shows, which is very exciting to think about”.
Expressing her gratitude, Maggie said, “I am an emotional person as it is but I was really touched by seeing how kind people can be”.
Maggie will be in London for the full week and we look forward to meeting her at London’s Olympia this Friday and Saturday.
For now, here’s a video of Maggie working with Motions Hair Care, which is once again the official hair sponsor of AFWL 2015 – helping to create dynamic looks for all the designers presenting on the catwalk.
